Woolworths Metro

Balmain Community Mural Project

In 2024, Joe was commissioned by the team at Woolworths Metro to create a suite of portrait/lifestyle imagery depictiing local community members to be used as the basis for a mural by French-Australian Mural Artist Hugues Sineux, on the side of their recently renovated Balmain store.

The brief was to capture people in studio as though they were going about their day to day activities. It needed to resemble a sunny day on Darling St but also keep with the artists visual style for clean lines and high contrast between light and shadow. The Woolworths Metro team went about assembling a large, representative cross-section of the community with help from Joe who happened to live locally.

On shoot day Joe and his assistant turned Balmain Town Hall into a photo studio and in consultation with Hugues and the Woolworths Metro team captured several thousand images of the over 30 enthusiastic community members of diverse ages, ethnicities and interests.

After and brief edit of the images to cull the volume they were handed over to Hugues to compose and create the final mural. To round out the project personally Joe visited the site on a few occasions to document Hugues at work.
